John has worked extensively with, among others, Noongar people of South West Australia, developing exhibitions that have promoted the work of the Aboriginal child artists of Carrolup, and assisting the establishment of a Cultural Centre at Marribank (formerly Carrolup Native Settlement). In 2005, John travelled to Colgate University in the US with two Noongar men (Athol Farmer and Ezzard Flowers) when Mrs. Rutter’s ‘lost’ Carrolup collection was discovered, and helped arrange for over twenty key pieces of the artworks to be exhibited at the Perth International Art Festival in Katanning the following year. John is currently developing a new project with David Clark, entitled 'The Aboriginal Child Artists of Carrolup: A Unique Storytelling, Education and Filmmaking Initiative'. The project focuses on the Story of a white schoolteacher who inspires traumatised Aboriginal children to create beautiful art that gains international acclaim and challenges a government’s racist policies. John is also editing the novel ‘Carrolup’ written by his late wife, Ghislaine Stanton van Mannen. |
